What does this measure?
The growth or decline in the value of goods and services produced in a region over a specified time period, adjusted for inflation.
Why is this important?
Gross Domestic Product is a primary measure of the economic health of a region, providing an overall gauge of the size of an economy and its vitality.
How is our region performing?
Between 2005 and 2014, the GDP of the Knoxville metropolitan area grew 8.4%, compared to growth of 8.0% at the state level and 10% at the national level. Among comparable metro areas, Austin, TX grew the most (49%), followed by Raleigh, NC (32%). Among other Tennessee metro areas, GDP in Memphis and Chattanooga shrunk (by 3.0% and 1.5% respectively), while GDP in Nashville grew substantially (25%) from 2005 to 2014.
Notes about the data
Metropolitan areas are defined by the Office of Management and Budget. The Knoxville metropolitan area includes Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Grainger, Knox, Loudon, Morgan, Roane, and Union counties. Figures are adjusted for inflation to 2014 dollars.
